Gozo is the sister island of Malta. It can be reached by a 25
minute ferry ride over the Gozo channel. You can also go by
helicopter!
Once in Gozo you immediately feel relaxed with the layed back way
of life. There are not as many spots to surf as in Malta, but the
main surf spot of Ramla Bay is radical when the wind is blowing in
the right direction from NW. Ramla is a golden sandy beach with
cross/onshore when it is blowing from NW and waves can get pretty
high when it reaches force 5 +/- so this spot is definitely good
intermediate to advanced sailors in these conditions.
You launch from the left side of the bay because in the middle are
a lot of stones in the sea coming from a wall built across the bay to
keep the Turks out in the mid 16th century. There is also a ruin of a
Roman villa on the sand dunes.
If the wind blows from the south then it is glass flat water for
the speed and slalom freaks.
When the wind blows from the west there is a spot in Qbajjar - it
is a bit sheltered to go out but once out in the wind you are in open
water and there is a deep reef which soon can form mast high waves.
This is for the advanced surfer only in wind above force 5. If you
lose your equipment you may not get it back because there can be a
strong current.
For easier conditions in a westerly wind go to Hondoq ir-Rumien.
You launch from a pebble beach and sail out into the channel between
Gozo and the small island of Comino. Intermediate sailors will have a
good time here with bump and jump conditions. There is a local
sailing club whose members are very friendly.
There is lots of accommodation from cheap very basic flats to very
nice old farmhouse accomodation with or without pool. For a surfers
farmhouse you can contact Bunty at surfwithbunt@onvol.net
